Hi,
I have a niece who's about 11 years old and I'd like to introduce her to graphic novels, assuming she isn't into them already. My brother's family is a bit conservative, so no hint of sexuality or vampires, please. My first thought was something along the lines of Gaiman's Stardust, until I remembered the sex reference. Anyone got any ideas?

Re: Graphic Novel for girls...
Tue, May 27, 2008 - 11:29 PMI should point out that I do know the difference between an illustrated novel and a graphic novel, and, yes, Stardust is an illustrated novel. Still, I'm seeking a graphic novel.

Wed, May 28, 2008 - 4:13 AMAt 11 is hard. At 15 I'd say the crow or Gaiman's Sandman (This is a graphic novel) or Gaiman's Black Orchard (I'm not %100 on that name but also a graphic novel). A lot of girls talk about ghost world but I've never seen a copy, it my not exist for all I know. If you completely disregard brother's wishes go for Johny The Homicide Manic. She'll rebel anyway at least this way she'll like comics too. -

Is that what you were thinking of? Yeah, might work for an 11 year old. I certainly liked both the style and the story. Or Manga - I have to dig out the book, but I was just given a very realistic manga dealing with the death of a man's father, leading to memories of his youth when his parents split up. Let me find the author, and I'll post it. -

Re: Graphic Novel for girls...
Thu, May 29, 2008 - 3:24 AMya, thats it. Manga probably has more to offer young girls, American comics, when directed toward children, are mostly for boys. You might just get her a subscription to Shownen Jump! (the ! is part of the title). -

Re: Graphic Novel for girls...
Thu, May 29, 2008 - 9:00 AMI'd recommend LAIKA by Nick Abadiz. It is about the dog the russians sent into space. The heroes are all female, it is a G rated story, but so powerful. It is a sad but wonderful book.

As far as manga goes, it's true that the comics of other cultures gear towards different and all demographics, but they also have different attitudes towards sex and romance. Every manga I've considered to list here has some odd sexual angle. For instance, guru guru pon-chan is by all standards a young girls book, but the title character is a dog that falls in love with a neighbor boy... a human... and by stray magic finds herself in human form from time to time, and the comedy stems from her puppy like actions. Cute, but weird.

Re: Graphic Novel for girls...
Fri, May 30, 2008 - 4:00 AMYou have a good point. I'm a big fan of Elfin Lied, I would recommend if it wasn't for the whole graphic violence and constant nudity. If not for that it would be perfect. You might try Excel Saga, it's silly but no nudity and the violence is mild for the most part.

Re: Graphic Novel for girls...
Thu, May 29, 2008 - 9:16 PMWow, these are some excellent suggestions.
Romance is a curious subject, but maybe in a few years.
I don't want to rush it. I'll let the parents field that one.
Thank you, all.
